Week of Sept 10-15th

Parents- Due to Irma, I gave next weeks words out so that  we could review for the alternative Assessment on Pollution that has been postponed until Tuesday, September 19th and Wednesday, September 20th.

Wednesday- Students will take notes on SS6G9 The impact of location, Climate and natural resouces in Europe vocabulary. The student will complete a Word Attack choice for the word below on page 27

Week 4(page28)

1. climate –weather conditions in a given area over a long period of time.
2. location- an actual place or setting.
3. natural resources- materials or substances that occur naturally and is
used for economic gain. (minerals, trees, and fertile soil)
4. renewable resource- a resource that can be replaced. (example : trees)
5. nonrenewable resource- resource that can not be replaced after
it has been used. ( example: mineral)
6. population distribution- where the people are located in a given area.
7. population density- the number of people per square mile.
8. currents- a body of air or water moving in a definite direction.
9.  trade- the action of buying and selling goods and services.
10.  trade barrier- an obstacle that prevents trade.
11. Fossil Fuel- general term for any hydrocarbon that may be used as a fuel, including coal, oil, and natural gas.
12. Hydroelectric Power -the power generated by falling water.
13. Geothermal Energy- energy that can be extracted from earth’s internal heat, for example, natural steam used for power generation.

1. Sabbath – a day of religious observance.
2. Pilgrimage- a journey to a well respected place
3. Quran or Koran- holy book of Islam
4. Torah- holy book of Judaism
5. Romance Language- the group of languages derived from Latin(Spanish, French, and Italian)
6. Cyrillic alphabet- Slavic alphabet used in Russia and other eastern European countries.
7. Monotheism – the belief in one God (ex: Christianity, Islam, and Judaism)
8. Polytheism- the belief in many Gods (ex: Ancient Rome, Egypt, and 
Greece)
9. Reform- to make changes in something.
10. Indulgence – a grant to remove sins by way of payment to the Church.

Week3 (page18)

  1. Ozone layer – A region of the upper atmosphere, between about 15 and 30 kilometers (10 and 20 miles) in altitude, that absorbs solar ultraviolet radiation.
  2. global warming– The gradual increase in the temperature of the earth’s atmosphere, believed to be due to the greenhouse effect
  3. acid rain– rain containing acids that form in the atmosphere when industrial gas emissions (especially sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides
  4. emissions- substances discharged into the air (as by a smokestack or an automobile engine)
  5. domestic waste– waste and trash created from houses.
  6. hazardous waste-a substance which poses a hazard to human, plant and animal health.
  7. pesticide– a chemical that kills unwanted animals(rats/mice).
  8. herbicide– a chemical that kills unwanted plants(Round Up)
  9. erosion- to wear away from natural forces or pollution.
  10. nuclear fallout- radioactive particles stirred up by or resulting from a nuclear explosion and descending through the atmosphere.

5. gulf- inlet of the sea partially surrounded by land
6. peninsula- a piece of land that is surrounded by water on three sides(example Italy).
7. steppe- an area of flat grassland(plain).
8. plateau- an elevated area of land with steep sides.
9. society-a group of people that live together in order and common culture.
10. culture- the customs,art,social institutions,of a particular

Week 1 Q1 Word Attack

1.Conflict – is an argument or disagreement that can lead to war.

2.distribution- to move a product from one place to another through trade.

3.migration- the moving of people or animals from one area to another.

4.Consumption- to use an item or use it up.

5.economics – the way people earn, spend, save, and invest their money.

6.barrier – an item that prevents something from happening. Example: a

trade barrier is an item/thing that prevents trade.

7.Government- a system that runs a country, makes laws to protect the

people, and enforces the laws created.

8.Geography – the study of Earth and its people.

9.Regions – a specific location on the Earth. Example: South Eastern United

States.

10.complexity- the way society gets more difficult over time. Example: laws

in the U.S.A.
